Give new meaning to Spring Cleaning

The Importance of Cleansing and Detoxification

By Nicole Clement, ND

Spring is the transition from winter, a time for rest and nourishment, to summer, a time full of activity. This transition is marked by rejuvenation and growth in nature as flowers bloom and trees blossom.  During this time of change, energy can be harnessed to renew one’s home as we undertake spring-cleaning, one’s mind as we focus on the new opportunities, and one’s body as we shake off the inactivity of winter.  Naturopaths traditionally recommend beginning a detoxification program in the spring. Detoxification is ideally coupled with the increased activity of the warm summer months and delicious meal ideas utilizing fresh spring fruits and vegetables. This synergy is a perfect way to optimize your overall health and lifestyle as you transition into the new seasons.

Detoxification refers to the removal of toxins from the body by neutralizing or transforming them into less harmful particles. This occurs in the liver and the particles are then removed from the body through our bodies’ “emunctories” – the bowels, kidneys, lungs, skin and the menstrual flow. Naturally, the body has developed these methods to eliminate toxins. So why is extra help needed? The answer is that the system is overloaded. In a typical day the body is exposed to an abundance of toxins − from the foods we eat (pre-packaged foods covered in pesticide residues and saturated with preservatives), to the beverages we drink (colors, flavors, alcohol, caffeine), to the environmental pollutants we walk, work and live in. Additionally, if that were not enough, most of us lead very stressful lives.  The cumulative potential can be exponential when individuals have poor digestion, colon sluggishness, and reduced kidney and liver function.  We cannot expect that our bodies can handle it all effortlessly and it only makes sense that we should do everything we can to support this vital ‘toxin removal’ process.

The principles of detoxification are simple: first, reduce your exposure to toxins; second, enhance your body’s ability to eliminate toxins by improving the health and function of excretory organs; and third, restore optimal nutrition. An individualized detox program can vary from person to person; but some general guidelines include eating balanced meals, taking in healthy oils, promoting an alkaline pH, restorative meditation and exercise, drinking structured water and increasing fiber intake.

What positive results can one expect from detoxification?  Through this rejuvenating process you can expect increased energy, improved circulation, weight loss, improved digestive/metabolic/hormonal regulation and enhanced overall appearance and vitality. It is best to work with a qualified health care provider, especially if you have any significant health concerns and/or are on any medications. You may experience some minor side effects particularly in the first few days, such as headaches, irritability, insomnia, muscle soreness and fatigue.
